Are Liposuction Results Immediate?

Your body needs fat to function, but it's not appealing when you see it in areas like your abdomen, thighs, and hips. Unfortunately, diet and exercise alone aren't always enough to eliminate fat deposits for good.

If you've tried everything else without success and yearn for a stunning physique, liposuction is a sure-fire way to get the results you want. Although it's invasive, liposuction offers unrivaled results to less invasive options.

At Breast, Body, Beauty Plastic, and Reconstructive Surgery, in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Aisha Baron and our team provide various cosmetic and aesthetic services, including liposuction. Dr. Baron discusses what to expect from the procedure and when you can expect to see results.

Understanding liposuction

Excess fat on the body is an unfortunate part of life — one many of us live with. However, if you're tired of looking at unsightly bulges of fat in the mirror and are ready for a change, liposuction is an excellent surgical option.

Liposuction is an invasive procedure that allows Dr. Baron to loosen large deposits of fat cells and remove them through a suction cannula. It's an outpatient procedure that can be completed in a few hours, depending on your treatment areas and health.

Dr. Baron makes a small incision in your treatment area during the procedure. She inserts a cannula under your skin and loosens stubborn fat cells. She then uses suction to remove the fat cells from your body and closes the incision.

Dr. Baron can remove up to ten pounds of fat in a single liposuction procedure, depending on the location of the fat and how much you have stored. However, recovery takes several weeks to months until you have the body you want.

Will I see results right away?

Unfortunately, even after removing several pounds of fat from your body, you won't see drastic results right after liposuction. Although you'll see them eventually, it's an invasive procedure that often results in fluid retention and swelling.

It's essential to have realistic expectations before entering into liposuction. If you want immediate results within a week or so, this procedure isn't for you.

The reason you won't see results right away is that your body is healing itself after the procedure. You may look like you gained weight from fluid retention and inflammation in your treatment area.

You may feel and look more bloated than before you went into surgery, but if you're patient, the results will begin to show. It often takes at least a week for the swelling to start going down and several months to see your final results.

Timeline of liposuction results

Everyone recovers from liposuction differently, depending on the area of the procedure, how much fat Dr. Baron removes, and how well you follow the recovery instructions. Most people require at least six weeks of recovery before returning to normal activities.

During the first week, pain, bruising, and swelling are normal. Dr. Baron may place a drain to remove excess fluid around your treatment area. You should also wear a compression garment around your treatment area to reduce swelling and fluid build-up.

You can return to work after a few days to a week, depending on how you feel and what you do for work. Returning to any physical activity or heavy lifting after liposuction takes about six weeks to allow the body to heal fully.

As the swelling goes down over the first few weeks, you'll begin to see stunning results. In most cases, you'll see the final results about one to three months after your procedure, although it may take six months in some cases.

If your skin seems a little loose after your procedure, it usually firms up over time. If you have excessive loose skin, you may need surgery to firm and remove it.

Are my results permanent?

Many people's most significant question is, "Are the results permanent?" The answer is both yes and no.

Liposuction removes fat cells permanently, but that doesn't mean some don't remain and regrow with unhealthy habits. Understanding the expectations after your procedure for results that last a lifetime is essential.

To keep up your results, adopting a healthy lifestyle is crucial. That means eating nutritious foods and cutting back on sugar and saturated fats. It also requires regular physical activity like walking, weight lifting, and other forms of exercise.

With the right mindset and a healthy lifestyle, you can expect your results to last a long time.
